Successful 10th edition for Alpitec China

Alpitec China celebrated its tenth edition from the 24th to the 27th of January. Together with ISPO Beijing, the leading multi-segment sports exhibition in Asia, Alpitec China offers an overview of the sector, including useful background information and expertise. Over 30,000 visitors came to the China National Convention Center in Beijing. The Asia Pacific Snow Conference and the very first APSC Technical Workshop proved a major success with a total of over 600 participants.

79 exhibitors and exhibiting brands from 11 countries showcase the complete range of mountain and winter technologies on 4,500 square meters. Compared to last year, the exhibition area increased by over 60%. Fiera Bolzano first took the plunge into China with Alpitec in 2009: visionary Erwin Stricker had already identified it as a future market back then. Ten years later, Alpitec is the leading platform for mountain and winter technologies in the Asia-Pacific region.

“Years of work in China are paying off now in particular, with not just one but two Winter Olympics coming up on the Asian continent. We feel that Alpitec China has establishing itself as the place to be for the sector, and see the immense potential of the Chinese winter sports industry. A major increase in exhibition space and satisfied exhibitors confirm this,” says Armin Hilpold, President of Fiera Bolzano. “This would not be possible without a strong partner, I would like to take this opportunity to thank Messe München for the valuable cooperation,” adds Hilpold.

Alpitec China and ISPO Beijing are providing a 360-degree overview of the entire winter sports sector. Klaus Dittrich, Chairman & CEO Messe München, explains, “Alpitec China allows us to extend the portfolio of ISPO Beijing, including infrastructure topics such as ski lifts and snow parks. Thanks to the Olympic Winter Games in 2022 in Beijing the passion for winter sports in China is growing. Of course, the international trade show for mountain and winter technologies benefits from this popularity, as well as the whole winter sports industry. Fiera Bolzano is an important and reliable partner for us. Together we can strengthen the winter sports industry in China. I would like to thank the organizer of Fiera Bolzano for the excellent cooperation in the past ten years.”

The Chinese skiing industry in figures

In the run-up to these major sporting events, winter sports are highly popular in China, and the government is supporting them as a priority. However, the double-digit growth rates from the previous years have not quite been maintained. This is revealed in the “White Book 2017” by Benny Wu, CEO of Beijing Carving Ski Sports Development Corp., the only collection of data that analyses and describes the skiing industry in China.

57 new resorts opened from 2016 to 2017, equivalent to a growth of 8.82%. In total, there are 703 ski resorts, registering 17.5 million visits (+15.89%) in 2017. For comparison: In the same period, the corresponding figure in Switzerland was approx. 23 million. Of the 703 existing resorts in China, 145 are equipped with one or more chairlifts. While that represents an increase of 16%, it is still low compared to European standards.

The Asia Pacific Snow Conference and the first APSC Technical Workshop provide insights

More and more decision makers and operators of ski resorts are realizing that the focus must be on quality, especially in light of these figures and just four years before Beijing 2022. They are taking advantage of the high quality information program offered by Alpitec China: The annual Asia Pacific Snow Conference was fully booked once again and the response to the first APSC Technical Workshop was very good with 150 participants. The workshop aimed to give an insight into the technical aspects of detachable ropeways and automatic snowmaking systems, with expertise from the exhibitors.

In the upcoming years, safety standards will be one of the key factors for ski resorts. China is the largest market for beginners and only when people feel safe, they have a good experience and will come back to ski again. In his speech at the APSC, Richard Wyne from Polar Solutions highlighted the importance of a professional ski patrol, a manual for emergency situations, a high level of competence and training and of course the ski school. The instructors need to teach the culture of skiing.

Alpitec China is the meeting point for a growing market

China continuous to have an incredible development potential: following Laurent Vanat’s “2017 International Report on Snow & Mountain Tourism“, the total number of skiers worldwide is currently estimated to be around 130 million, this is less than 2% of the world population. China could almost double this figure with its 120 million potential skiers.

Alpitec China provides an important gateway to China’s growing winter sports market and more and more companies seize this opportunity. Ryley Thiessen, President of Ecosign Mountain Resort Planners Ltd. from Canada, explains why Alpitec China is the leading trade show in the sector, “I love the layout, I really think that Alpitec China has raised the bar this year. The quality is amazing. The first two days were a little slow but it was still a good networking time for everybody. Friday was insanely successful for us. We had three or four existing clients that are coming back to work on more projects. We sat down together and we developed plans here at the show, saving probably three or four weeks of travelling and emails. Coming here is so efficient for a company like us when you travel internationally. We also met two or three new clients and maybe in a few months we have a new project. So we are very happy.”

John Calverley, Area Sales Manager at Prinoth, says, “Alpitec China is a great chance to meet new customers and hear about new projects that are coming in the next few years. It is good to see that there are not just projects for the next couple of years but also for 5, 10, 20 years in the future. As a company like the HTI Group where we want to be involved in the lifts, piste vehicles and the snowmaking, it is particularly important for us to get this kind of contacts which you don’t always find by simply going around and visiting.”

In order to be able to better respond to the increasing demands of a booming market, Alpitec China and ISPO Beijing move to the bigger New China International Exhibition Center in 2019, where China’s winter sports industry will meet again form the 16th to the 19th of January.

10th Alpitec China on the starting gate

From the 24th to the 27th of January, 79 exhibitors and exhibiting brands from 11 countries showcase the complete range of mountain and winter technologies on 4,500 square meters in Beijing’s China National Convention Center. The annual Asia Pacific Snow Conference and the very first APSC technical workshop complete the exhibition offering by providing subject-specific contents and giving detailed technical insights. As always, Alpitec China is taking place together with ISPO Beijing, the leading multi-segment sports exhibition in Asia.

The winter sports sector in Asia is booming and the countdown for the Olympic Winter Games is on: not only for the XXIII Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang (South Korea) in only two weeks’ time but also for Beijing 2022. The leading platform for mountain and winter technologies in the Asia-Pacific region is reflecting this positive trend and presents itself bigger than ever. “In 2018, Alpitec China’s exhibition area increases by over 60% and reaches 4,500 square meters. The key to our success though is not only an exceptionally varied exhibition offering but also an outstanding information program. To celebrate the 10th edition, it was our goal not only to grow in exhibition size, but also to focus on content for our esteemed visitors from all over China,” states Armin Hilpold, President of Fiera Bolzano Exhibition Center. “We are striving to accompany China on its way to become one of the leading destinations when it comes to winter sports tourism. Together with ISPO Beijing we are providing a 360-degree overview of the entire sector, creating valuable content for decision makers to draw inspiration from.”

The Asia Pacific Snow Conference and the first APSC Technical Workshop provide insights

The Asia Pacific Snow Conference is an absolute highlight for operators of ski resorts and the whole winter sports industry. On Thursday, 25 January 2018, well renowned international and domestic speakers will discuss up to date topics such as safety standards, digitalization, new media promotion and sports events as driving force for destination development. Benny Wu, CEO Carving China, will also present his new "White Book 2017" which provides the latest data on the ski industry in China.

Decision makers from the ski industry all over China are becoming experts not only on ski resort management, but are also more and more interested in the technological side of business. This is why Alpitec China offers the first APSC Technical Workshop on Friday, 26 January: a unique opportunity to get a glimpse into the world of winter technologies. The morning session starting at 9 a.m. is all about Detachable Ropeway Systems with the participation of Doppelmayr, Bartholet Ropeways, Poma and BMHRI Beijing Materials Handling Research Institute Co. Ltd. Among the discussed topics will be maintenance and training as well as the latest developments of passenger ropeways. The entire afternoon is dedicated to Snowmaking Systems. Leading companies like DemacLenko, TechnoAlpin, Sufag, Actissim and SMI Snowmakers will cover different aspects of the topic, from automatic systems to indoor snow and the right snow quality for ski races.

Key players are looking forward to Alpitec China 2018

In 2018, the international trade show for mountain and winter technologies celebrates its tenth edition. All the exhibitors are already looking forward to meeting up with their future clients in China. Michael Mayr, TechnoAlpin’s Sales Area Manager in East Asia, says, “With a market potential of 300 million people and the 2022 Winter Olympic Games being hosted in Beijing, the Chinese Winter Sports market continues to be at the core of TechnoAlpin’s global strategic focus. As in past years, TechnoAlpin is proud to participate in the Alpitec exhibition also in 2018 and recognizes Alpitec China as a key industry platform which constitutes an ideal environment to introduce its customers and partners to the newest innovations in the field of snow making. TechnoAlpin is strongly looking forward to meet all key market players at the Alpitec China 2018, cooperating with our customers and partners to develop China into a key winter sports nation.”

“For us at Doppelmayr, China is an important market. Therefore, it goes without saying that we present our products at Alpitec China, the leading trade show for winter technologies in Asia. Next to winter sports, we have already build some spectacular ropeways for summer tourism in China. In both the segments, the market potential is very high. As for other Olympic Winter Games in the past, we will be happy to prove our expertise also in the venues for the Olympics 2022,” explains Ekkehard Assmann, Head of Marketing and Public Relations.

Present and future of winter sports at Alpitec China 2018

In the past ten years, Alpitec China has successfully established itself as the leading platform for mountain and winter technologies in the Asia-Pacific region. The Chinese winter sports sector is booming in view of the 2022 Olympic Games in Beijing and Alpitec China is growing as well, to respond to the increasing demands of the Asian market. In 2018, the exhibition area increases by over 60% and will be reaching roughly 4,500 square meters.

To celebrate its tenth edition, Alpitec China 2018 presents itself bigger than ever. France, Austria and also Switzerland will have their very own Village. So far, ten new exhibitors have already confirmed their booth, among them not only international companies but also a number of Chinese brands.

The Olympic Winter Games - taking place in Asia twice in a row - are already on the horizon. With the XXIII Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang (South Korea) just around the corner, the focus is already moving on to the next major sports event in Beijing in four years’ time. The infrastructure planning for the Olympics in China’s capital is about to start and international companies are in competition to gain major contracts. This development is obviously having a positive impact on the international trade show for mountain and winter technologies: well-known exhibitors step up their presence as more and more Chinese companies present themselves at Alpitec China.

The enthusiasm and the interest for winter sports is clearly growing among the population as well as on a political level. Considering the increasing number in winter tourists, safety standards are becoming a key factor for Chinese ski resorts. It is also one of the up-to-date topics that will be discussed at the annual Asia Pacific Snow Conference, taking place on Thursday, 25 January 2018.

The APSC 2018

“As the ski and snowboard industry develops in China, their safety standards need to keep pace. Although best practices know no geographical boundaries, what is acceptable in one resort in Europe or Canada may be different from the USA or New Zealand.  Because of the long history of mountain recreation in Europe and less litigation than in North America, the experience is noticeably different for the recreating public”, explains Richard Wyne of Polar Solutions (Canada), one of the many highly qualified speakers at the APSC 2018, “It is great for the industry to have cultural differences throughout the world but skiers and snowboarders must have confidence in the resort's safety and rescue capabilities. Three of the most important areas for Chinese development are: Risk Management, Patrol Competence and Standard Operating Guidelines.”

The Asia Pacific Snow Conference is an absolute highlight, not least thanks to the presentation of the new "White Book 2017": Wu Bin, Vice president of Vanke Lake Songhua Resort and Chief Strategy Officer of Vanke Ski Division, presents the latest data and the status quo of ski resorts in China. Immediately following, Laurent Vanat, Founder of Laurent Vanat Consulting SARL (Canada) gives an overview of the key industry figures worldwide. Mat Woods, Head of Sales at Cardrona Alpine Resort in New Zealand, explains how to structure the offer of a ski resort. The APSC registered an attendance record already in 2017 with over 400 participants and will once again be the meeting point for operators of ski resorts that want to get ready for the future.

Overall, Alpitec China 2017 was a success, with 68 exhibitors coming from 11 countries and over 40,000 visitors (together with ISPO Beijing). The trades show’s 10th edition will be held from the 24th to the 27th of January 2018 in the China National Convention Center of Beijing, together with ISPO Beijing, the leading multi-segment sports exhibition in Asia.

Ten years of winter technologies with Alpitec China

For the past ten years, Alpitec China has had a significant impact on the market for mountain and winter technologies in China and is going to celebrate its tenth edition together with ISPO BEIJING in the China National Convention Center (CNCC) in Beijing from the 24th to the 27th of January 2018.

Alpitec China 2017 was a success, with 68 exhibitors coming from 11 countries and over 40,000 visitors, together with ISPO Beijing. To celebrate its tenth edition, Alpitec China 2018 presents itself bigger than ever. The exhibition area of the international trade show for mountain and winter technologies increases by over 60% and will be well over 4,000 square meters.

The Chinese winter sports sector is enjoying constant growth as it is preparing for the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing, just four years after the XXIII Winter Olympics, which will be held in Pyeongchang, South Korea, from the 9th to the 25th of February 2018. Reflecting this positive trend, Alpitec China is growing as well, constantly working to respond to the increasing demands of a booming Asian market.

For all the operators of ski resorts and cable cars that want to be ready for the challenges of the future, the Asia Pacific Snow Conference will once again be the meeting point. The APSC already registered an attendance record with over 400 participants in 2017. On this occasion, Wu Bin presented the results of "The White Book 2016", which examines the status quo of ski resorts in China: since last year, ski resorts have increased by 14% (from 568 to 646) and skiers by 20% (from 12,500,000 to 15,100,000). China has already 850 magic carpets with a total length of 128 km, including 232 new carpets in 2016 (+37.52%). The ski resorts also installed 1180 new snowmaking machines (+29.50%) for a total of 5180. 410 snow grooming machines, 80 of them newly added in 2016 (+24.24%), are used to prepare the slopes.

In this context, the international trade show for mountain and winter technologies has successfully established itself as the leading business and information platform in the Asia-Pacific region. It is a unique opportunity to find out about product innovations presented by the key players of the sector, to maintain relationships with the Chinese costumers and to make new business contacts: “We are proud to provide an important gateway to the rapidly growing Asian winter sports market and are looking forward to writing yet another chapter of this success story in 2018”, says Thomas Mur, Managing Director of Fiera Bolzano.

The 10th edition of Alpitec China will be held from the 24th to the 27th of January 2018 in the China National Convention Center of Beijing, together with ISPO Beijing, the leading multi-segment sports exhibition in Asia.
